If Air Law is the subject you fail by knowing it “more or less,” Subject 021 is the one you fail by trying to memorise it.
Ask around any ground school and you’ll hear the same thing: AGK — Aircraft General Knowledge, or by its full name, Airframe, Systems, Electrics and Powerplant — is the one people brace for. Not because any single piece of it is impossible, but because there’s so much of it, and because it punishes anyone who tries to shortcut understanding with rote learning.
So let’s break down what you’re actually walking into, why it has the reputation it does, and how to study it so the volume works for you instead of against you.
What is ATPL Subject 021?
021 is the “how the aircraft works” subject. While Principles of Flight explains why an aircraft flies, AGK explains the machine itself — every major system that keeps it in the air and the people inside it alive.
It’s one of the 13 theoretical subjects in the EASA ATPL(A) syllabus, and it’s comfortably one of the largest. The exam is 60 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours 15 minutes — the same 75% pass mark as every other subject, but a far wider surface area to cover to get there.
Here’s the scope, roughly in the order most courses tackle it:
- Airframe and structures — how the aircraft is built, and how it’s designed to survive loads and fatigue
- Hydraulics and pneumatics — the muscle behind flight controls, gear and brakes
- Landing gear, wheels, brakes and tyres
- Flight controls — primary, secondary, and the systems that move them
- Fuel systems
- Electrics — generation, distribution, buses, batteries
- Piston engines
- Gas turbine engines — the big one, and where a lot of marks live
- Fire protection
- Ice and rain protection
- Pressurisation and air conditioning
- Oxygen and emergency equipment
Read that list again and the reputation starts to make sense. That’s not one subject. It’s a dozen mini-subjects wearing a trench coat.
Why students actually fear it
It isn’t the difficulty of any one topic. It’s three things working together.
The sheer volume. Most subjects have a shape you can hold in your head. AGK has twelve. You can know hydraulics cold and still get ambushed by a fuel system question you skimmed three weeks ago. The breadth means nothing stays fresh unless you keep circling back.
It rewards understanding, not recognition. This is the trap. You cannot memorise your way through 021. The exam is built to test whether you can follow a system — trace the flow through a hydraulic circuit, predict what happens when a generator drops offline, understand why a fire loop triggers. Students who learn diagrams as pictures to recognise, rather than systems to follow, hit a wall around the halfway mark of their revision.
Engine depth catches people out. Almost everyone underestimates how much turbine engine knowledge 021 demands. It’s not enough to know a jet engine sucks, squeezes, bangs and blows. You need the stages, the airflow, the temperatures and pressures, and what each component is doing to the air as it passes through.
The mindset shift that makes 021 click
The students who breeze through AGK almost all describe the same realisation: stop treating systems as separate blocks, and start seeing how they connect.
An aircraft isn’t twelve independent systems bolted together. The engine drives the generators that power the electrical buses that run the fuel pumps that feed the engine. Hydraulics move the flight controls but also the gear and the brakes, and when a hydraulic system fails, you need to know what you lose and what backs it up. Pressurisation depends on bleed air from the engines. Everything talks to everything.
Once you start studying 021 as one connected machine rather than a checklist of parts, two things happen. The volume shrinks, because you’re learning relationships instead of isolated facts. And the exam gets easier, because a huge proportion of 021 questions are really asking “if this fails, what happens next?” — and you can only answer that if you understand the connections.
How to study Airframe & Systems
After watching students go through this one, the playbook that works looks like this:
1. Redraw the diagrams — don’t just read them. This is the single highest-value habit in 021. Take a hydraulic or fuel schematic and redraw it from memory in simplified form. If you can sketch the flow, you understand it. If you can only recognise it, you don’t — and the exam will find that out. Redrawing forces the “follow the system” thinking the exam rewards.
2. Study failures, not just normal operation. For every system, ask: what happens when this breaks? What’s the backup? What do I lose? A large share of 021 questions are failure-mode questions, and this framing turns passive reading into exam-ready knowledge.
3. Give the turbine engine the time it deserves. Don’t leave engines as a rushed final push. It’s one of the heaviest-weighted areas and one of the most conceptual. Understand the airflow through each stage properly and a whole block of the exam opens up.
4. Spread it out and circle back. Because of the volume, cramming 021 doesn’t work — you’ll forget the first half while learning the second. Space it across your study plan and keep revisiting earlier systems so they stay warm.
5. Drill question banks to find your blind spots. With this much surface area, you will have weak patches you don’t know about. Question banks are how you find them before the exam does.
Why it matters beyond the exam
Of all the ATPL subjects, 021 is the one you’ll feel most directly in the flight deck. Every abnormal checklist you’ll ever run, every “what’s that system doing right now?” moment, every failure you’ll be trained to handle in the simulator — the logic underneath it is 021.
Pilots who genuinely understand their aircraft’s systems — not just enough to pass, but enough to reason about them — are the ones who stay calm when something isn’t behaving normally, because they can trace the problem instead of just reaching for a memorised response. That understanding starts here, in the subject everyone was so nervous about.
The volume is real. But the fear is mostly a study-strategy problem in disguise. Approach 021 as one connected machine, redraw what you read, and study for failures — and the subject with the scariest reputation becomes one of the most genuinely useful things you’ll learn.
