On 12 August 2026, for the first time in over a century, a total solar eclipse crosses the Iberian Peninsula. For a minute or so, in a band running from Galicia to the Balearics, the Sun vanishes, the temperature drops, and the middle of the day turns to something close to night.
It’s a spectacular event. It’s also a surprisingly good exam question in disguise. Because if you were flying under Visual Flight Rules the moment the sky went dark — would that count as night flight?
The instinctive answer is yes. The regulatory answer is no. And the gap between those two is exactly the kind of thing ATPL Air Law and Operational Procedures are built to sort out.
First, what’s actually happening on 12 August
The eclipse crosses Spain from west to east in the early evening, low on the horizon. The band of totality — where the Moon fully covers the Sun — sweeps from A Coruña across León, Burgos, Zaragoza and out through the Balearics, with the rest of the country seeing a partial eclipse. In A Coruña the eclipse begins around 19:31, peaks near 20:28, and totality itself lasts barely 76 seconds.
For a short window, daylight collapses. In the northern half of the peninsula especially, the drop happens fast and is dramatically noticeable. So you can see why a pilot in the air might reasonably wonder which set of rules they’re now operating under.
Why “it got dark” doesn’t mean “night”
Here’s the key idea, and it’s pure Air Law: in aviation, “night” is a defined legal term, not a description of how dark it looks outside.
Night is defined by the position of the Sun below the horizon — specifically, the period between the end of evening civil twilight and the beginning of morning civil twilight. Those times are calculated from astronomy and published in advance. They depend on where the Sun is relative to the horizon, and an eclipse doesn’t change the Sun’s position — it just temporarily blocks its light.
So even though an eclipse can plunge the sky into near-darkness in the middle of the afternoon, the published times for sunrise, sunset and civil twilight for that day stay exactly the same. Spain’s civil aviation authority, AESA, made this explicit in its guidance for the 2026 eclipse: flying during the eclipse is not considered night flight, and the day/night VFR periods remain unchanged.
In other words: the sky lies, the definition doesn’t.
Why this distinction actually matters
This isn’t regulatory pedantry. The day/night boundary determines real things: what ratings you need to be legal, what equipment the aircraft must carry, what minima apply, what a licence with or without a night rating lets you do. If “night” shifted every time a cloud, a storm or an eclipse dimmed the sky, none of those rules could function. So the definition is tied to something predictable and calculable — the Sun’s geometry — not to ambient brightness.
That’s a theme you meet again and again across the ATPL syllabus: the rules are built on precise, defined terms, and a lot of exam questions are really testing whether you know the definition rather than the everyday meaning of a word. “Night” is a perfect example. So are “ceiling,” “flight time,” and dozens of others.
The part that’s genuinely about safety
Saying the eclipse isn’t legally “night” does not mean it’s a non-event for a pilot. AESA’s guidance is clear that the reduced light is a real operational factor to plan for, even if it doesn’t change the rulebook.
The concerns are practical. A rapid drop in light can make terrain, obstacles and — critically — other aircraft harder to see, right when traffic increases because everyone wants to witness or photograph the event. Reduced contrast can make wires and obstacles nearly invisible from the air. The authority even advises against wearing eclipse-viewing glasses while flying, since they cut outside visibility precisely when it matters most. And the sudden change in solar heating can shift wind and thermal conditions quickly — a bigger deal for balloons, gliders and paragliders than for powered aircraft.
None of that changes whether it’s “night.” All of it changes whether it’s safe — and a good pilot has to hold both ideas at once. This is the real lesson: the legal definition and the operational reality are two separate questions, and you’re responsible for both.
The bigger takeaway for anyone studying ATPL
A solar eclipse is about as dramatic as a “does the definition or the appearance win?” question gets. But the underlying skill — knowing that aviation runs on precise defined terms, and being able to separate what a rule technically says from what a situation looks like — is one you’ll use in every subject, every exam, and eventually every flight.
The eclipse will be gone in a couple of minutes. The habit of thinking like that stays with you for a career.
